Vacancy Type: Conductor/Music Director
Application deadline: 30 September 2018
Description of vacancy:
The Solway Sinfonia wishes to appoint a new conductor with effect from April 2019. The vacancy is created by the decision of Geoff Keating, our founding musical director, to retire from the position after 21 years with the orchestra.
The Solway Sinfonia, which comprises music teachers and other experienced amateur players, is based in Dumfries. It attracts players not only from Dumfries and Galloway, but also from the Scottish Borders, Cumbria and Northumberland.
It plays two main concerts as a full orchestra each year, one in the Easterbrook Hall, Dumfries and one in another town in the region, the latter in order to raise funds for a local charity. It also plays a third concert each year in a reduced format, also in aid of a charity. It aims to take music to places around Dumfries & Galloway which would not otherwise have the opportunity of hearing orchestral concerts.
The orchestra has historically had, at most, five rehearsals over a period of about two months prior to each main concert and a rehearsal on the afternoon of the concert itself. Rehearsals take place in Dumfries at Troqueer Church Hall.
In addition to preparing for and conducting the orchestra at rehearsals and concerts it would be helpful if the successful candidate would be prepared to write programme notes for inclusion in concert programmes.
This vacancy is being advertised through appropriate channels. Candidates will be long and short listed and then interviewed with a view to final candidates being trialled in front of the orchestra at a time to be agreed (probably January 2019). The final selection will involve a ballot of the members and committee consensus.
It is expected that the successful candidate will commence rehearsals in April 2019.
